Splish Splash

May 31, 2011

Ever since the weather has turned so hot, Floyd has been asking for a pool to cool off in.  Grandma somehow caught wind of this and one happened to appear at our house over the weekend. Let's just say, Floyd is in LOVE!

He was a little leery at first and thought we had just given him a HUGE water bowl for the backyard.  He cautiously investigated it and s l o w l y started putting in one paw at a time until all four were submerged.  Now he is sold! I think the more he investigates and sniffs the more and more he will enjoy it! Especially if this 90 degree weather sticks around!

This afternoon we invited Sidney over for a pool date and Floyd was very excited to show her his new toy!  They ran, played and splashed all through the yard.

Rug on Over!

May 29, 2011

This Memorial Day weekend marks the 1 year anniversary of the Mister and I being in our home.  We were so excited to move into our first home last year and have been in love ever since.  To celebrate this anniversary, we got a rug.

Actually, it took me a year to find one I liked, was big enough and wasn't a million dollars.  It also just so happened to be this weekend.

One would think that since I work at an interior design firm and I am, in fact, a designer, I would be able to find a rug.  Wrong.  I searched high and low and everywhere in between for a rug that I loved and met our criteria.  I found plenty that I liked but none that I loved.  I knew that if I was going to make a large purchase, such as a rug, I needed to LOVE it.  I even scoped out some rugs are Market that I had had my eye on.  They, too, did not wow me in person.

I have discovered that there seems to be this problem when designers need something for their own homes...they can't make a decision.  I honestly think because there are so many options available and you know as soon as you place an item on order something new you like better will appear.

And then Friday happened and good things just kept happening all day.

I just happened to wander into a little store, that starts with a Home and ends with a Goods, and there she was.  And she was the right color. And the right size. And not a million dollars.  Ahhhhh the angels were singing!! I got the okay from the Mister on the style and color and she was in my car ready to go home!

She matches perfectly with the sofa and the pillows and is exactly the right sze.  I'm in love and so happy to finally have a rug down under the sofa.  The whole space feels so much homier already!

What do you think?

Awkward and Awesomes!

May 26, 2011

Awkward:

  • Floyd and I were just on a walk and saw these 3 young boys with a wheelbarrow, an end table and multiple bottles of water and liquid.  I gave them a strange look and they said, 'we're making chemicals!' Ooookay, be careful? Where were their parents?!?
  • About 4 minutes later this little boy wiped out on his back right next to us.  Again, where are these parents?
  • Today at work I was on the phone with a vendor and asked them to fax me a document.  She said, 'ugh, yeah, I guess I can do that...'
  • While staying at camp last week, Floyd proceeded to steal another dogs lovey (stuffed animal).  TWICE! Just took stole it without asking and kept it in his kennel.
Awesome:
  • Being on vacation.  Not awesome: coming home from vacation.
  • Going to see Hangover: Part 2 tonight!!
  • Reading 2 great books on vacation
  • Getting my hair cut tomorrow: my girl is awesome! I always feel like a supermodel coming out of there
  • New things are developing here at TBC.  Can't wait to share them with you!!
  • This horse is wearing a hat. That's beyond awesome.

How's your week been?

Meet Shirley and Hank.  They are the newest members of our household. And I'm obsessed with them.

I have a small obsession with bird images.  Actual birds, not a fan.  Bird images, love!  Shirley and Hank have taken up residence on our floating shelves.  (and those two boys in the corner aren't bad either :) )

And speaking up birds and 'tweeting'....Total Basset Case has joined the Twitter craze.

    Tortellini Pasta Salad

About a year ago I had this delicious pasta salad at a party and hadn't been able to stop thinking about it! I am, in no way, claiming this recipe as my own.  But I wanted to share because it is SO delicious!
I did make this recently for Easter brunch but failed to take a picture of it :( I did a little internet searching and found a very similar recipe at Sweet Tooth Sweet Life. She added more fruit in hers than I had in the original one and I think those additions sound great!  This is an incredibly yummy and SUPER easy side dish! Perfect for a summer pitch-in!

    Tortellini Pasta Salad
    1 pkg pre-made/frozen tortellini
1 can (11 oz) mandarin oranges
2 cups grapes (sliced in half)
    I bottle poppy seed dressing

Cook tortellini according to package directions and cool.
Place tortellini and all other ingredients in a bowl and mix.

    It's that easy!

Florida Vacation Recap: Deep Sea Fishing (Part 3)

    May 24, 2011

Even before we were in Florida, Mike and Sarah kept telling us how fun the deep sea fishing tours were.  We were easily convinced and decided to go on a full day fishing tour on Thursday.  It turned out to be an extremely interesting day and I'm very glad we went!

The tour leaves early in the morning and goes about 2 hours out into the ocean before putting the anchor down (I'm almost positive that is not proper boating jargon).  It was mesmerizing to be in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the ocean.  I was having a hard time wrapping my head around the hugeness of the ocean.  It was a very strange sensation to look as far as you can see and only see water.  Literally, 360 degrees around just. water. Strange.

Once the captain had decided upon a good fishing spot we were allowed to cast our poles and start fishing! I'm happy to report that all four of us caught quite a few fish.  There are some bans in place in Florida so not everything we caught we could keep.
There were definitely some fisherman on our boat that knew what they were doing way more than we did.  They were catching many large and interesting fish!  One guy even caught two small sharks!!  (And, lucky for us, at the end of the day, he didn't want them and offered them to Mike. Score!)

It was a long day to be out in the sun and on a boat all day but it was a very cool experience!

Florida Vacation Recap: The Food (Part 2)

    May 23, 2011

We had a lot of delicious food on our vacation.  So much, in fact, I felt it deserved it's own post.
On Tuesday we spent the day and night at Blue Springs State Park.  The park is home to a natural spring that it is at a consistent 72 degrees all year round.  We swam up and down the spring but, oh my was it cold! The spring is also home to large quantities of manatees during the winter months.

That night Mike fried up some delicious fish for us! We had fried shark, sea bass and gator (!).  Everything was very yummy, even the gator! Mike marinated the gator in hot sauce and milk then breaded and fried them.  The other fish was also breaded and fried and we had it on sandwiches.

The next night was the one that I had been anxiously waiting for...the crab boil!! I've heard many stories of how delicious Mike's boils are and the rumors were true.  It was SO. GOOD.

The boil consisted of all the normal fixins': sausage, corn, mushrooms and potatoes.  Mike also included rock shrimp, snow crab and king crab legs.  We were all pretty convinced that he had made too much crab for 4 people.  Well, apparently we were set out to prove ourselves wrong! I think almost every last bit was gobbled up.

We also had delicious appetizers at Mai Tai's, yummy burgers at the Turtle Shack and more fish sandwiches at Down the Hatch.

    Florida Vacation Recap (Part 1)

    May 22, 2011

First off I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the lovely ladies who filled in for me while I was gone...Sarah, Elise and Bethany did a fantastic job! Thanks again!!

The Mister and I spent the week in Ponce Inlet, Florida, which is just outside of Daytona.  We were fortunate enough to stay with a good friends of ours, Mike and Sarah.  Mike and the Mister have been bff's for a very long time and Mike and I used to be neighbors growing up.  Mike and Sarah were wonderful hosts and we can't wait to go back!

Overall we had a fabulous and delicious trip!! Getting there was a little rocky...may have had something to do with flying on Friday the 13th.  We were super delayed leaving Cincinnati and therefore missed our connection in Atlanta.  We ended up having to stay in Atlanta over night (on Delta's dollar) and ended up getting in Daytona about half a day late.  Other than that, the trip went off without a hitch! Even with flying back on the day the world was supposed to end, ha!

Here are some shots from the trip...I have to give Mister credit for the majority of these pictures, didn't he do a great job??

    Crawfish festival in downtown Daytona

On Sunday we headed up to St. Augustine and spent the night there.  St. Augustine is a very beautiful and old city.  I loved looking at all of the architecture and taking in all of the sights.  That night we took a 'Creepy Crawling Pub Crawl', it was interesting, to say the least! We had a lot of yummy food and sangria in St. Augustine and I would love to go back and explore some more!

On Monday we went to the Daytona Cubs baseball game.  It was 'Belly Buster Monday' which meant we paid $11 and were able to get into the game AND eat all that we could from their sponsored vendors! Double score!
P.S. I picked up those earrings in St. Augustine and I am beyond obsessed and it didn't hurt that they were only $6.

The last night we were there we had dinner at Mike and Sarah's favorite local place, Down the Hatch.  Somehow we all managed to order the same meal but that was quite alright because it was delicious! It was my first adventure with trigger fish but I can now say that I'm a fan!

That's our trip in a nutshell! We had some really interesting and yummy food adventures on the trip so I want to devote an entire post to those.  I'll be back tomorrow with those details...it may or may not include gator....

Wednesday: Chicken salad sandwiches and veggie soup
    Thursday: Leftovers
Friday: Chicken egg scrambles and turkey bacon

What are you having this week?

P.S. I know, I know the vacation pictures are coming, I promise!

    May 21, 2011

    Hi Lovelies!

I can't wait to share all of our great pictures with you- there are some keepers! I'm sad to say that the pictures are probably going to have to wait until tomorrow though. My computer is about at its max and I know if I try to upload it them right now he (Maci, my computer) is going to be veryyyy mad at me.  I plan on getting a new hard drive tomorrow, yay!

Buuuut to tie you over, I do have this shot of the sunset on the beach. Enjoy!

Guest Post: Bethany from Runner Bee

    May 18, 2011

Today we have the lovely Bethany from Runner Bee stopping by.  I am so happy to have her here to share with you something she is very passionate about!
Side note: Bethany is Sidney's mom aka Floyd's girlfriend. Oh la la!

Hey, I'm Bethany from Runner Bee and I am so excited to be here with my first ever guest blog post!
I was excited - and panicked - when Sarah asked me to do a guest post. What should I write about it? Although I pretend to be crafty, I am not the creative genius that Sarah is - my last project sat half completed on my kitchen table for a month before I finally decided to get rid of it. The finished product always looks way better in my head than in reality. I really enjoy cooking, but I just use other people's recipes and don't often alter them very much.

So, why not write about something I am passionate about? That made it easy - Girls on the Run!

I first learned of Girls on the Run (GOTR) in the early summer of 2006. I loved the concept behind it and decided to run my first marathon (Chicago) to raise money for GOTR as a member of Team Tiara (now Solemates). I then joined the Race Committee, and finally became a coach.

GOTR is a 12 week program designed to teach girls in the 3rd - 8th grades life lessons along with helping them develop a positive attitude towards exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle. The girls learn how to stand up for themselves, the dangers of bullying, the importance of quiet "me" time and much much more. All of the lessons involve running games. Over the 12 weeks they train for a 5K - for most of them it is their first 5K race. We encourage them to keep moving forward - run, walk, skip, hop, jump - as long as they keep moving, it doesn't matter how!

The race is indescribable. On Saturday May 7 we had our race down at Paul Brown Stadium. Roads were closed and the DJ played the Cupid Shuffle and Cha Cha Slide as hundreds of girls danced in the street. They had their face and hair painted, matching shirts, and huge smiles on their faces. Moms, dads, grandparents, siblings and friends all came to cheer the girls on. This is not a race for time, but a race to show these 8-12 year old girls that they can achieve their goal.

The Cincinnati chapter started in 2005 with 12 girls and now reaches over 1900 girls annually. Wow!

Every group of girls I have coached has impacted me. It is amazing to watch them come together as a team and each grow individually. They are truly inspiring. Coaching is often the best part of my week and has helped me grow as a person in many ways as well.

Check out GOTR and see if there is a chapter near you - after all, it's the volunteers that make this possible!

Thanks again to Bethany.  The work you do with those girls is beyond admirable!

Guest Post: Elise from Romantic Hippie

    May 16, 2011

I am incredibly happy to introduce everyone to my good friend, Elise, from Romantic Hippie! Elise and I have been friends for a very long time and she is a master at all things crafting, cooking and gardening.  Today she is going to share some great herb gardening tips with you! Take it away, Elise!

Hello there, everyone! Elise here, popping over from RomanticHippie.com. I’m so grateful to Sarah for the chance to say hello to you all and share some herb gardening tips! Let’s jump right in and start with a few basic plants to start you on your way.

I've found that the heartiest herbs to start out with are Basil, Oregano, Chives, Mint, Sage and Rosemary. Here's some info about each:

Basil is one of my favorite herbs to grow, hands down. It's extremely versatile as I use it in both sweet and savory dishes. Plus, it comes in a number of great varieties and frankly, I LOVE the taste of it! My favorite three to grow are Thai, Lettuce Leaf, and Genovese.

        •    Thai Basil has a pop of anise flavor to it and works well with any Asian dish, especially soups. Its leaves are slightly smaller but a little goes a long way.
        •    Lettuce Leaf Basil has a giant leaf which makes it great for pesto and other sauces because you don't have to use as much of the plant. It's also perfect for Caprese salads!
        •    Genovese Basil is probably the most common type of basil and has a subtle sweet taste. It can be used for just about anything so I always like to have it on hand.

Basil as a whole should be grown in full sun. It's pretty fast-growing and when it gets really warm (June/July) it has a tendency to bolt and go to seed. I generally don't mind when this happens because the basil buds are actually jam-packed with flavor so I just add them to any dish where I need the leaves. If you're planting them in a planter that is out in the open, I generally move them in during particularly windy or more violent thunderstorms.

Chives are probably my second favorite herb to grow because, like basil, it has flavorful buds when it goes to seed. Though, chives are even better than basil in that respect because the flowers are beautiful purple little pops of color that provide a strong, wonderful aesthetic and flavor to any recipe. I love using chive flower when plating dishes because they have a function but also give off a little flair.

Oregano is a great herb because it is extremely hardy. It has a woody stem so it can take just about everything. Make sure to plant oregano in full sun and prune regularly to keep it bushy. Plant this herb in its own container because it will take over anything in its path.

Mint is another fantastic plant for your herb arsenal because it is also very diverse in the ways it can be used. You can use this in sweet and savory dishes and in alcoholic drinks for fun, or in tea to settle your stomach.  Because it is in the same family as oregano, mint also takes over whatever pot it is planted in and should be grown separately. And if you decide to grow mint in your regular flower beds or garden- be warned! It will take over!

I'm less familiar with Rosemary and Sage but I do like to have them around. Sage goes really great when you're also using lemon in a meal and I've found that rosemary dries famously and can be used throughout the rest of the year. I love using sage in my Salt-crusted Fish recipe.

As far as where to buy herb plants, I like to look around a couple places. I generally like to stick to local greenhouses or farmer’s markets because I think they have a better grasp on quality control and know who and where their plants are coming from. Not to mention the benefits of supporting the local economy! That isn't to say that I don't drop by a box-shop garden center now and then, but it's good to have an idea of what a healthy plant looks like and compare both places.

Make sure to read the directions for each plant to know where to best position them as far as full sun, partial sun, or shade. As in any case with gardening, your state university's agricultural extension office is a fabulous place to go for online info because they have people researching this stuff everyday in your appropriate climate area. Here is a helpful guide from Purdue's extension office as to where to place your plants and lots of other tips.

Thanks again, Elise! And stay tuned next week when I reveal my herbs that I've been attempting to grow!
