Total Basset Case: (Hair) Highlight of my Life

(Hair) Highlight of my Life

Yesterday I told I had a hair decision to make.
I know you've all been in suspense.

See, I used to be an avid hair highlighter.
And then I went to college and my money started being spent of other things.
(Bars, shopping, eating out, shopping, shopping) and the highlighting budget went to the wayside.  And that's where it has stayed for the past 6ish years.

Anyway, I have decided to make the plunge to get my hair highlighted again.
I know, I know, this is breaking news for everyone.
Considering it's been (at least) 6 years since I've done this and for a girl that is crazy particular about her hair, it is breaking news.

Mister is tired of hearing me talk about the highlighting and I am losing my mind over finding tiny gray hairs. Besides plucking the the grays, this is the best decision I can come up with.

As per all big decisions in life, I am turning to you lovely ladies and Pinterest.
I want a subtle look, very sunkissed and nothing too intense.  I want them to be noticeable but not streaky and OMG what did you do.

According to Pinterest here are my options:
 Sooo what are our thoughts?
Should I go for a more subtle brown or a hint of red?
If I had no reservations I would ombre it but I'm not sure how that would go over so I think I should stick to highlights.
You would think that at 28 years old, I could make these decisions on my own.
Nope, I need you ladies.
Help!
Thoughts, concerns, input?!

My vote is hint of red. I was the same way years ago - so many highlights! Then I decided I needed a change and went with a deep auburn/reddish color and I'm never going back (for a while, at least)! :)

I love going a little lighter for summer- I love Chrissy Teigen's new hair (the left photo!)

I think the red is fun. Its a little different but still natural looking. I think with your dark hair it would look awesome on you!

Go with a natural auburn highlight...then you don't have to decide between red and brown :) Plus natural auburn is my favorite! Make sure you tell whoever does your hair that you want it to look "natural" and not purple-y. I have seen poor attempts at auburn.

My vote is to use the top right picture. I love it.

I would also add to weigh in that 1. Red hair fades very very easy so it might fade into a shade you don't like as much or will have to maintain more.. And now often do you want to be in the salon? The more subtle, the less money you'll end up paying in the long run... Just a few things to think about :)

My hair is naturally dirty blonde and I'm platinum blonde now. I have to be in the salon every four weeks.

I, too, have been dying to highlight my hair! I want to see what you decide! That may get me the push I need to get it done.

PS: I love the left picture..perfect and suddle!

I was told by my hairstylists that I have red tones in my hair and it will naturally gravitate towards a reddish hue. Since I can't go blonde (cuz I would look too weird) I'm fine with red. I love the top right and long left pictures thou!!

Hmmm...I'm thinking a subtle brown to start out with. I think that'd be easier to transition from nothing to subtle brown, than from nothing to touch of red. Either way, you're going to look gorgeous...so it's a win win!

I lust over Chrissy's hair, so I vote something like that. I also lust over Chrissy's body and her Twitter feed.

Red scares me when it comes to dye. I'm team BRUNETTE!

Yay!! I am obviously a highlight addict so I am super duper excited for you! I think either one would be gorgeous, so just go with what you would feel best doing! I can't wait to see it!

Ugh, I wish I had your coloring to pull off the left picture. The colors flow so well together. Whatever you decide will look fabulous! :)

So fun! I love trying out new hairstyles! I think some fine highlights of auburn red and blond would be gorgeous and an easy transition back into highlighting your hair.

However, if you have the kind of hair that soaks up the sun like mine, be careful with the red. I haven't colored my hair in the Summer in a very long time because the sun changes the color drastically. Maybe try the fine blonde/brown highlights for the Summer and let the sun do its thing to help you out. When Fall comes around, add some red to get some more depth and the color will stay truer to its color. Have fun with your new style!

I definitely think lighter is the way to go for summer!

I'm horrible at making decisions too. You are not alone.

Sarah, I vote for the pic on the left and think that would look beautiful on you. I think that the red highlights you are referring to are really LOW LIGHTS. Lindsay and I get them occasionally, but they do not last very long at all. Just play around with the sample swatches ahead of time. Have fun!
