Total Basset Case: Red, Red Door

Aug 22, 2013

Red, Red Door

With all of the updates to the outside of our house, our front door is now looking a little sad.
And dull.
I don't do dull.

So it is our new mission to paint our front door.
And soon.

After much deliberation, I think we've decided on RED.
Like, bright RED.
My thought is that if you are going to go red, then go bold and bright.

My initial thought was a rich, dark navy blue.
But then I got to thinking about the seasons and hanging wreaths on a navy door and I didn't love that look as much.
There is definitely a place for a deep navy color (powder room, some dining rooms) but my front door isn't the place.
Now, red, red I can get on board with.
Just imagine a bright red rood with a great Christmas wreath hung on it.
Yes please.

I have always loved a classic, red front door on other houses and think it will really pop on our house and our street.
1 | 2 | 3 | 4
I am usually one to go against the grain with any sort of design but when it comes to a classic, red door, I am happy to swim right along with the crowd...for the most part.
No one else in our neighborhood or street has quite the bright red that I am aiming for.
I can only imagine what the neighbors will think.

Funny enough, Valspar makes a paint called, 'classic red' (I promise it's brighter on my color fan) that I think is just about perfect.
I am thinking in a semi gloss...yes yes yes.

What are your thoughts on red front doors? Yay or nay?
Any other suggestions for us?

I think this should be a quick and easy project for us to knock out so I am excited to get it started!

I so wish we could do a bold color on our front door... it just wouldn't go with the exterior of our house. So we painted it a dark chocolate brown (big improvement from the maroon it was before).

I've decided to paint our laundry area and master closet some fun colors... maybe I'll add red to the list?

Ooo red would be really fun! What color is the rest of your house? I'd love to see a before picture. I liked your idea of navy too, but that's only because I love navy and white houses.

I love it! I painted my front door teal last summer and it still puts a smile on my face every time I'm driving up to my house!

You should post a how-to on painting your front door. I want to SO bad, but am really worried I'd mess it up! :) Is your front door wood or metal?

We just painted our door black. Everyone in our neighborhood has this crazy oak colored door, s we finally picked black as our color, but now I am wishing I had done red! I'm with you about navy though. We painted our hall bathroom navy, and well, it looks amazing! much better suited for a bathroom than a front door in my opinion. Stick with a bright bold red!

YES to the red door! My husband knows that when we purchase a home, it is going to have a brightly colored door. I love them!

When I lived at home I always wanted my Mom to paint our front door red and she always stuck with white now that I am recently married I would give anything to paint our front door and I can't because right now we are renting off my step-grandpa and he likes the door the way it is. This is going to look great!!!

Well, now I want a red door. So many of our neighbors have maroon and green and I just want to tell them - it does not have to be that way! Think outside of the box! Ahhh, living in a community of engineer. ;)

Do it! When we buy a house next year I told my husband it has to be white with black trim and a red door :)

YES! I love this! There is something about bright colored doors that just gets me. I can't wait to have my own house so I can do that...don't know how my husband will feel. But he'll live. haha

LOVE this idea!! I think it will completely change the outside look of your house! It has been on our "to-do" for forever to paint the inside of our front door black. I'll be interested to know how easy of a project it turns out to be!
