Total Basset Case: A Good Nights Rest

A Good Nights Rest

At least one of us in our household is getting one.
Even better that it starts at about 8:30pm

As bad of a decision that it is, Floyd has always slept with us in our bed.  Even with the hassle (and trying to move covers with 50lbs of dead weight one them), I love it and really, really miss him when he is not there.  That being said, lately, we would be okay with him sleeping on the couch all night.  His allergies are very intense right now and he spends half the night awake itching.  Keeping us awake too.  We are working on some allergy remedies and trying to get him better any way we can.

Mister got a FitBit for Christmas and we have been loving tracking his sleep progress every night.  Well Floyd ended up sleeping in the guest room (by his choice because he put himself to bed at 9pm and never got back up) and Mister and I both had a great night of sleep.  We didn't stir or move for 5, uninterrupted hours.  I won't say I woke up refreshed because I always need more sleep, but it was a change of pace.  But I also really missed my snuggle buddy.
He has a bed in our room but it is for DAWGS and he pretty much refuses to sleep in it.  And who can blame him when there is a human bed with a down comforter to sleep on?

Any doggie mamas out there have any allergy remedies or tips to help our sweet boy stay in his own bed at night?

our vet told us that you can give your dog benedryl & it seems to work for our basset! she only gets allergies in the summer for the most part though when she's outside in the grass a lot.

Agreed. I used to work at a vet and we would tell people to start with benadryl before trying prescriptions which can be so pricey. The key to benadryl is 1 mg per pound though so make sure he's getting 50 mg or it won't really do anything. I think the frequency is every 4 hours which seems excessive but it works. My dog has seasonal allergies and had really bad ones when I lived in Texas. *Double check frequency with your vet though!

Coconut oil in his food. Colonel our basset gets a heaping tablespoon of that and greek yogurt in his food each morning. It helps with allergies and general "yeastiness". The most pleasant side effect has been he smells WAY less tortilla chippy. Try adding a mattress topper to his bed, I know it sounds insane but if his bed is more cozy than yours he might have a change of heart!

I concur about the Benedryl. We were spending $40 a month on dog meds for Baxter and the vet said that the over the counter stuff worked just as well!

Typically the 2 smaller dogs sleep with us and Abby sleeps on her dog bed. I'm not sure how we got her to do that, other than I think she likes having her own bed, and I'm sure she is happy to have more room than squeezing into a bed with 2 humans and 2 other dogs. They may be small but they sure do know how to stretch out and use up half the bed. I don't have any advice for allergies, but I hear sometimes vets give dogs prednisone for allergies. It's really cheap (like you can get a month's worth for like $10), but it can make your dog very hungry, thirsty and possibly crazy. Just a heads up on that one in case your vet ever brings it up. It works, and is cheap, but you have to consider the side effects and see if it's worth it. Abby has been on it a couple of times and I blame it for making her a little food monster.

As much as I like to say otherwise, I love having our 80 lbs of fur on our bed at night too. She always gets down and lays on my decorated bed pillows (cause the cat takes the dogs big bed), but she will never sleep elsewhere...girls got some separation anxiety issues (ok, we caused that lol). What remedies are you doing for Floyd's allergies? Bella gets them bad too and it's now to the point where we take her collar off every night, otherwise she would wake us with her itching in the middle of the night.

I don't think I've EVER slept all the way through one night, without waking up at least 3-4 times. Just constantly tossing and turning. I'd love to get a fitbit and see what my sleeping patterns are like. I think it boils down to us needing a new mattress...yikes!

I keep telling Jordan he needs to get a FitBit and track his sleep. He wakes up SO MUCH during the night. It's crazy!

Y'all are going to make such great parents of a human baby someday. And Floyd, well, he's going to make a great big fur brother. I love that he put himself to put bed, that's awesome!!!!! I hope he feels better though, I'm dealing with seasonal allergies myself and feel terrible. I think mountain cedar is going to be the death of me. Ugh!!!

we've used benedryl too for when roscoe's allergies gets really bad. luckily for us, he doesn't scratch when his allergies are bad - he licks himself and turns himself red :( hopefully floyd gets those allergies under control.
and no tips on getting a dog to sleep in his own bed. roscoe has his own bed but always sleeps in bed with us. can't say i really blame him though :)

We have a blue nose pit bull who is very sensitive! Occasionally we do give her benadryl (you can give the same amount of milligrams as your dog weighs) but we had to change her dog food. Her allergies are almost non existent now. We use Taste of the Wild, it's a little pricey, but if it keeps us out of the vet we are willing to pay it! :)

I'm having the same allergy issues with the mini pin I ended up with when my grandma passed. She keeps us up all hours scratching
