Scrappy Trees: Christmas DIY

Nov 29, 2011

I love making, giving and receiving homemade gifts for Christmas.
Each year I love to create a new craft to make and give to loved ones.
This year Pinterest came to the rescue.
I recently saw this
and this
and thought they were adorable.

Luckily, I have a few million hundred fabric scraps.

In the design world, fabrics are often discontinued.
While it is sad to see them go, it is a crafter's dream!
When these fabrics get discontinued at work, I often go through them and keep the pretty ones.
I have a hard time saying no to beautiful fabrics.
This equals a loooot of fabrics...

Once I saw these trees, I knew I finally had a use for all of my fabrics!
These trees are so simple to make and very unique.

Items Needed:
  • fabric and leather scraps
  • hot glue
  • canvas (I used a few different sized ones)
1. Decide what color scheme you want your tree to be
2. Cut rectangles of scraps to make the body of your tree
3. Cut a square for the tree trunk. (I used leather scraps for this.)
4. Cut a star for the top (or angel if you are really good!)
5. Hot glue a larger piece of fabric over the canvas to create your background. (I think a burlap background could be really cute for these too!)
6. Lastly, glue the scraps onto the canvas and ta da!

The options are endless with this craft!
I am excited to make more of these and can not wait to give them as gifts!

Have you made any Christmas DIY presents yet?

Weekend Wrap Up: Thanksgiving Style

Nov 28, 2011

We had a great Thanksgiving weekend with friends and family!

Here's how it went down:
Wednesday
Raced home to Madison after work to make it my high school reunion meeting
to plan our 10 (!) year reunion coming up in 2013.
(so weird!!)
Then we had dinner and headed out to see everyone!
We had a great time catching up with old high school friends.
Whitney and I.
Sorry this is so fuzzy-not sure what is going on

Thursday:
The Mister, Floyd and I got up early and headed down to Tennessee to see my family down there!
This was Floyd's very first trip to his great-grandparents.
He did very well in the car and very well while he was there!
There were 5 (!) dogs at my Papaw's house for the day.
Everyone got along great!
The Mister and I have started the tradition of going Black Friday shopping at midnight on Thursday.
(Apparently we are crazzzy!)
Last year it was Wal Mart, this year it was Kohls.
Well, it was supposed to be Target but once we saw the line we decided on Kohls.
When I say line, I mean A LIIIINE.
We guesstimated it was over 1/4th of a mile long.
Our sanity won over the savings.
We did score some good deals at Kohls though!
I can't share them quite yet...wouldn't want to ruin any Christmas presents!!

Friday:
My mama and I got up (semi) early and I went shopping again.
Who doesn't love crazed shopping twice in 8 hours?!
We, again, scored some good deals!!
The 3 of us headed back to Madison to spend time with Whitney before she headed back to Dallas.

Saturday:
The Mister and I ventured to downtown Madison to do some Small Business Saturday shopping!
I love supporting small businesses and especially in my hometown!

Sunday:
We celebrated Thanksgiving with the Mister's side of the family.
The Mister's mom made a delicious meal and it was a great time with his family!
 Mister even carved the turkey!

Phew!
I'm worn out just talking about it again, ha!
We hope you had a great weekend with loved ones as well!

Dr. Mama, Please Prep for Surgery

Nov 18, 2011

Floyd has a favorite toy.
His name is Dino the Dinosaur.
Floyd has had Dino since day 2 of his life with us.
The Beckers gave Floyd Dino and it has been true love ever since.
(Speaking of the Beckers, did you enter the giveaway yet?!)

Floyd loves Dino.
Like, reallllly, really loves him.
Because of this love, Dino has had more than one surgery in his short life.

Did you know that doggie toys get surgery?
I did not until my Mamaw offered to sew up our dog Princess' toys when I was little.
She was the first doggie toy surgeon I knew.
Thank goodness she taught me so well.

That being said, occasionally, Dino needs to be sewn back together.
These moments are very tense for Floyd.

Dino was scheduled for surgery once again last week.
Floyd was showing a large level of concern over his patient's well being.

He eyes did not leave Dino the entire time I was sewing.
He was extremely concerned about his patient.

After the surgery, Floyd and Dino needed to snuggle with one another.

A boy and his bestie.

P.S. Wish Floyd luck, he is going to a new camp today!
We will have a full report next week.

Trip to Urban

Nov 17, 2011

I finallllly made it down to Urban Outfitters.
I've been talking about going for about 2 years a month.
So the Mister and I trekked down to Clifton and to check it out last Sunday.

Let's just say I should have set 0 exceptions for the trip.
There were a few shirts and dresses in there that I really liked but overall, I wasn't wowed.
The sale and home sections (my favorites) weren't very big and that was very disappointing.

I did find this scarf that I fell in love with.
I told the Mister to let Santa know how much I loved it.
It's SO soft and leopard print.
What more do you need?

I knew I couldn't leave without making at least one purchase.
I came across this ELF eye shadow set and it was all she wrote.
No joke, 99% of the colors are amazing in this set.
When does that ever happen??
And the best part...
it was $5!!

I have been using this a lot already and I know it will come in very handy for the holiday season.

Update: I was just at Target and they have this palette there too!

Fridays with Floyd: To the Park

Nov 11, 2011

We recently took Floyd and Sidney to the 'fancy dog park'.
The one with the pond, rock paths, jungle gyms and big open spaces!
Doggie dreamland.

We felt it was necessary for Floyd to wear his life jacket while we were there.
Bassets aren't know for their swimming abilities.
And Floyd isn't know for his grace.
But do not let that jack fool you.
Floyd did not step one paw into the water.
Sidney, on the other hand, swam her little toosh off!

P.S. Don't tell Floyd but Grandma and Sophie will be here when we get home from work!

Tasteful Times

Nov 8, 2011

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to 'Tasteful Times'.
Tasteful Times is a 'gourmet food store' located in Indianapolis (Fishers), Indiana full of delicious food and wine.
Tasteful Times is owned by a good friend of mine, Jon.
Jon happens to be engaged to one of my best friends, Maggie.
According to their site
'They realized there was nowhere locally to find some of the finer food and wines they loved to enjoy with friends and family. A combined retirement and entrepreneurial dream of the family birthed the concept with exceptional customer service as the primary goal.'

I recently visited Tasteful Times and I was blown away by its beauty and vast array of products.
(And in a total blogger fail I forgot my camera to take pictures of the beautiful space).

Jon and and his family have put together an incredible compilation of unique food and fantastic wines.
Tasteful Times also offers many spices, salt, sauces and rubs.
As soon as I walked in I could tell how much time, love and thought had been put into carefully creating Tasteful Times.
There were so many delicious options that I had a very hard time choosing what I wanted!
After much deliberation I narrowed it down to the following:
Tuscan Farmhouse Herb Seasoning (great on anything and mixed with oil on bread)
Caribbean Jerk Rub (yummy on chicken, shrimp, anything)
Apple Jalapeno Jelly (best over cream cheese with crackers)
Quattro Mani Wine
Along with carrying great and unique products, Tasteful Times takes pride in offering an array of products from local vendors as well.
My favorites are S.A.L.T. Sisters, Traders Point Creamery, and Joseph Decuis.
You can see them all here.

I can confidently say that all of these choices were great ones!
I can not wait to go back to pick up some more goodies!

You can 'like' Tasteful Times here and follow them here on Twitter!

Recipe: Queso and Salsa Chicken

Nov 5, 2011

A few weekends ago we had some new friends over and I made this queso.
The Mister and I are HUGE Mexican food fans and so when I saw this recipe on Pinterest I knew I had to try it.
Let's just say...it was a very good decision.

We had some queso leftover and I wanted to get creative with it.
I took inventory of our fridge and determined we had queso, salsa (Trader's Joe version=delicious), and chicken.

I broke out the crock pot and got to work.
I used:
1/3 cup salsa
1/3 cup queso
2 chicken breasts
I mixed everything together in the crock pot and set the time for 3 hours.

Verdict:
Amazing.
This meal was definitely a winner and will be repeated in the near future.
Especially that queso.

Fridays with Floyd: Personal Trainer

Nov 4, 2011

The Mister and I always talk about how funny it would be if Floyd wore sweatbands and/or was a personal trainer.
We turned this dream into his Halloween costume.
And I think it turned out quite well.

I picked up some kids basketball shorts and a t-shirt at the thrift store.
I then cut a hole in the butt of the shorts for his tail.
I kept asking the Mister if we should cut a hole for his wee wee in case he needed to go...
he said it wasn't necessary...

Then I took an old shirt and made Floyd a headband.
(With holes for his ears, of course.)
And finally I cut up an old wash cloth, added some elastic and made his sweatbands.

All in all I think it turned out pretty well.
And it was cheap!

Speaking of a trainer...
Floyd may need one soon.
He has been eating us out of house and home lately!
I'm pretty sure he is working on his winter coat.
We have definitely noticed a weight gain...haha.
On the plus side, it is more skin to love on :)

I've made these twice now and both times they have gone over very well.
So well I want to share the recipe with you!!

3/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup applesauce (I used unsweetened)
1  15 oz can pumpkin filling (pie filling)

2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg

Mix all dry ingredients and add 1 cup of four at a time and mix until all of four is mixed in a thick batter.

Nutella Filling:
1 8 oz cream cheese
1/2 cup of nutella
1 egg

Beat in separate bowl.

Preheat oven to 375
Place muffin liners in muffin pan
Fill liners with 2 tablespoons of muffin batter
Place 1 tablespoon of nutella filling
Top with 1 tablespoon of muffin batter
