Awkward and Awesomes!

Jul 28, 2011

I have 2 stories for you today in awkward and awesomes.  And, appropriately, 1 is awkward and 1 is awesome.  Funny how that worked out, huh?
Warning: Long post.

Awkward:
  • I answered the phone the other day at work and this is conversation that I proceeded to have with an older woman (I'd say she was about 65.  And yes that's a relevant point and not I'm not calling 65 super old but she was older.)
Me: Thank you for calling Dzin, may I help you?
Woman: Who is this?
Me: This is Sar...
Woman: No, where is this?
Me: This is Dzin, in Mason.
Woman: I need the number to the dentist office in Mason.
Me: Okay...I guess I can look it up for you online...
Woman: Well don't you have a phone book? His name is Dr. Whatever (I can't remember).
Me: No, we don't have a phone book.
Woman: WHAT? You don't have a phone book?
Me: No...We just use the Internet
Woman: I find that impossible to believe that you don't have a phone book.  (Impossible is really the word she used to show her disbelief).
Me: I'm sorry ma'am we just don't have one.
Woman: Well, Ernie (the husband I'm guessing) says the dentist number is 5946.
Me: Okay...(Thinking, that's nice to know, why don't you try that number ma'am).
Woman: Well where in Mason are you located
I tell her
Woman: Well I am going to call the phone company and tell them to send you a phone book
(Thinking to myself, how are you going to call the phone company if you clearly don't have a phone book yourself?)
Me: No that's okay but thank you! We don't like to waste the paper so that just really isn't necessary.  We will continue to just use the Internet.
Woman: Hump. And what was your name again?

This woman was NOT happy that we didn't have a phone book.  Who actually uses a phone book these days?!

Awesome:
  • I pulled off a surprise.  That in itself deserves an award.  I am, by far, the world's worst liar.  The Mister once guessed what I got him for Christmas over the phone...and he was in Australia.  He could tell I was lying from half way around the world.
As you guys know my mama's birthday was last Thursday.  I had been scheming for a about a week with my aunt to surprise my mom.
Last Friday my mom drove to Tennessee to visit my Papaw and family.  Little did she know I was not far behind her.
Somehow I managed to convince her that Maggie was coming to town to visit and go shopping.  This was not true...at all.  I even went so far as putting it on my awesomes last week to throw her off.  Sneaky sneaky.
So Mama had called to see how the hair cut went on Friday and I just told her lie after lie as I was driving down the road.  I told her that after I was done with my cut I was running my normal Friday errands...Target, grocery, etc.  Not true.
She then called me again around 3 to tell me she had made it to Tennessee safely.  She could tell I was in my car so I told her I had run back out to get something else.  Sneaky.

About 5:30 I pulled in Papaw's front yard (yes, the front yard...had to be sneaky so the dogs didn't bark) and I walked in the front door.  My aunt Kelley had unlocked the door for me, then apparently Mom walked by and locked it back (thinking someone had left it unlocked) and then Kelley unlocked it, again.  So I walked in the front door and into the family room where she was sitting.
The look on her face was priceless!!! She just stared at me in shock! Between me surprising her and my hair cut I think she was done for.  She just kept saying, 'what are you doing here??? How did you get here?? Why are you here??'
I was so happy to be able to surprise her and spend the weekend with her for her birthday!

All in all, it was a success! I was so happy because I LOVE surprises...like really love surprises.
The Mister has surprised me about a million and a half times during our relationship and I've been 100% shocked each time.  I love seeing other people get surprised, being involved in surprised and now, knowing I can pull one off.

And because all posts need a picture...

What I Wore Wednesday

Jul 27, 2011

I originally saw this series over at The Pleated Poppy and really loved it!
I am not with it enough to take pictures every week of all of my outfits (nor are they cute enough to be photographed).  But I thought I would pull a small group of outfits together from the past couple of weeks and join the party.

Details: Cardigan: Target via Goodwill, White tank: Target, Belt: NY&Company, Pants: Limited, Shoes: Kohls, Watch: American Eagle
P.S. extra points if you can spot the basset hound...

Details: Dress: Banana Republic via Snooty Fox, Belt: Target, Headband: H&M, Shoes: Target
Details: White Tee: Target (these are the best t-shirts), Skirt: Old Navy, Necklace: Gift (boutique in Cincinnati), Shoes: Belk

Thoughts? Do we like this series or not?
(Obviously these photos were pre the big cut but not all that long ago.
)
The link up at The Pleated Poppy is always a great source of outfit inspiration!  So regardless if you like my outfits or not, be sure to check out her site! I'm linked up there this week.

P.S. Disregard how messy my room is, please :) And yes, I know, I need a bigger mirror.

DIY: Ribbon Bracelet

Jul 26, 2011

I previously shared this DIY over at Everyday Easy but I wanted to re-post it in case any one missed it.
My mom recently asked me to make her one to use at her job as an elementary school counselor.  We are developing a story to go along with the different colors and weaved effect.  i.e. weaving friendships, different parts making something whole, etc.

Recently when I was home visiting my mom I decided to scavenge through her old craft supplies.  I came upon a shoe box full of ribbons.  Jackpot!  I quickly googled 'ribbon crafts' for ideas.
One of the first ideas I came across was this video.  I was immediately intrigued by this very cute craft and knew I had to get to work on it.  At first I practiced with some of her ribbons to get the hang of the pattern. I then headed off to JoAnn's to purchase some spools of ribbons that were the correct width (I used 3/8") and coordinating colors.
This method of 'braiding' is very similar to a type of friendship bracelets that I made as a kid.  The method is so easy and becomes almost mindless once you get the hang of it.

1. First cut approximately 2 yards of each of the 4 colors of ribbon.

2. Make a small mark in the center of each ribbon and weave the 4 stands together.

3. Now it's time to begin braiding.  The first braid goes in a clockwise direction and the second goes in a counterclockwise direction. Using every other ribbon, start braiding.  So in this case, the BLUE comes down, the YELLOW over, the GREEN up and the ORANGE over and through the BLUE.
4. Now reverse those steps to create the second step.  Repeat this braid until you get to the end of the ribbon.  When you reach the end of your ribbon, flip the braid over and start again on the other side.

5. Once you reach the end of your ribbon on both ends, simply stitch up the ends and clip off the excess.
6.  You will need to then to slightly twist the ribbon strand and stitch the ends together.

Chop Chop: The Big Reveal!

Jul 25, 2011

I did it! I chopped my hair on Friday...and I LOVE it!
It is definitely taking some getting used to but I really like it.

As soon as I told my stylist I was going to chop my hair she immediately suggested we measure it and see if I had enough to donate it to Locks of Love.
We measured and I did have enough! Yay!
It is required to have 10" of hair to donate and mine was right at 10" mark.

To get all 10" she had to cut it a little shorter than I was originally anticipating. (Insert momentary panic.)
After a deep breath, I was more than happy to cut my hair a little shorter so someone else could make use of it.

I am having fun learning and experimenting with different ways of styling it.
I think more DIY headband projects are definitely in my future!

More pictures to come once I play with it a little more!

(P.S. that is not my house in the background. Ill explain where I was later in the week. )

Fridays with Floyd: Lake Dog

Jul 22, 2011

Floyd had a great time at the lake last weekend.
The Mister helped him learn how to swim and utilize his new life jacket.
I think he liked the water but was not a fan of getting that much water in his ears.  Hey, that's a lot of ear to get water in!

video

You gotta dry off after going swimming!

Awkward and Awesomes! And a birthday!

Jul 21, 2011

Awkward:

  • Middle of nowhere restaurant/gas stations on road trips.  Walking into said establishment searching for the restroom and everyone stops talking and eating and stares at you.  It was like a scene out of a movie.
  • Again, attempting to use the restroom and the woman before you didn't lock the door.
  • A bug flying down my shirt...while I was in Meijer.  Yes, I got it out...right there in the card aisle.
 Awesome:
  • The little kids on our street that have set up shop in their driveway playing the drums.  You know their mother said, 'yes, I will buy you drums but they can ONLY be played outside!'
  • This description of queso...
  • The Becker's are having a girl!!
  • Seeing my girl Maggie so soon!
  • My mama! She's just plain awesome but it's also her birthday!!H
Here are some of my favorite pictures with her!

Happy birthday, Mom!! I loooove you!

Chop Chop

Jul 20, 2011

This is earth shattering news that I know you have all been dying to know...
I've decided to cut my hair.  I know, I know, you have all been in suspense.

I made an appointment for Friday for the big chop.  I'm thinking shoulder length.
I've gathered a few photos (who doesn't do that?) I have a feeling stylists actually hate when we do that but a picture just explains it so much better than I can.

I really love this one but it's a little shorter than I think I can handle and I'm not sure my hair is thick enough.

Jen does no wrong in the hair world.

This is probably a reasonable length.

I would die for a big swooping bang.  Dang you, cowlick!

I've had shoulder length hair before but it has been awhile and I am ready for a change!  I am nervous but excited for the new 'do! I really love the girl that cuts my hair, Jessica, and I will probably let her make the decision on which is the best cut.

So which one is your favorite?

Weekend Wrapup: Lake Weekend

Jul 19, 2011

This past weekend we headed up north and spent time with our friends, the Beckers.  You know, the ones with that adorable little man, Jack?  Although we did not get to see Jack (he was with the grandparents) we had a fabulous time with his parents at Lake George!
Kady has a great wrap up on her blog here.

The Beckers had recently acquired a new jet ski and I don't think there was a moment when one of the 3 boys wasn't on it.  It was fun to see grown men giggling like school girls and having the best time of their life playing on the lake.

Floyd went with us and had a great time too! He got to try out his new life jacket and put it to good use in the lake.  More details (and a video!) on his swimming abilities coming up on Friday!
