Total Basset Case: November 2013

Meeting PW once again

You guys may have noticed that I am sorta, slightly, kinda really obsessed with the Pioneer Woman.
WELL, she ventured back to Cincy and I was so excited to go see her again.
Bethany and I have been counting down to this day for awhile now.
She's on tour promoting her new holiday cookbook.
(P.s it's full of all sorts of deliciousness, I'd pick one up if I were you.  They would make great holiday gifts too!)
She even brought her daughters this time.  They are as tall, gorgeous and sweet in person as they are on the show.
And because I'm 46 shades of crazy, I wanted to make and take her something that would maybe help her remember me.
So on top of wearing my basset shirt, I made Charlie and Walter (monogram) dog treats.
And gave her a basset cookie cutter like mine.
See? Crazy.

Unlike last time, Bethany and I were much closer up in line and got in and out in a reasonable time.
And even got to see Allison!
But, just like last time, Ree was so, so sweet and engaging.  She makes you feel as if you are the only one in the room when you speak with her.
I told her about the treats and cookie cutter and we talked about Floyd.
And his rascalling ways and I showed her the video of me reading the Charlie book to him.
She commented on how much she loved my basset hound shirt and said something to the tune of 'from one basset hound mama to another'. Swoon, I died.
Seriously, I think we would be best friends if we could go grab a glass of wine together.

Come back soon, Ree!
We have a basset hound that is happy to share his frito paws with you!

Weekend Wrap Up : Productive

If there is one word to describe this past weekend, it's productive.
And if you know me, that's a great weekend in my books.
I managed to get a whole heck of a lot accomplished and crossed off my list these past few days and I am so happy!

Friday I ran to the mall very quickly to pick up a few Christmas gifts.
Then raced home and it was time for Catching Fire with friends!!!
We have been anxiously awaiting this movie since the second the first one ended.
Bethany may or may not have gotten us tickets approximately 2 months ago when they were first available.
It was incredible and awesome and better than I could have imagined.
I LOVED it.

Saturday I was up bright and early to run 6.5 miles with my running group.
Then I ran some errands and got my hair done...all before 12pm.
After my errands I came home to this awesome box on the porch.
Floyd and I were both beside ourselves with the contents!! (excuse the purse and mess on the floor, as I said, we were really excited and couldn't wait to tear into our box!)

You may remember when Floyd reviewed Rachael Ray's Nutrish dog food - well they were generous enough to send some more yummy treats and bones to my sweet boy!!
They are also giving away one bag each of Nutrish Savory Bites (Floyd's favorite), Soup Bones and Soup Bones Mini to one reader! Just comment below with one thing you did this weekend.  (Winner will be announced on Wednesday)

Sunday was the most productive day of all!
I redid some of the decor in our house, hung new pictures up, did about 46 loads of laundry and whipped up some Christmas crafts.  Oh, and a trip to Target, of course! (P.s. the long sleeve Target tees are on sale this week for $6.  I would go stock up if I were you- they are my favorite!)
For dinner we had our neighbors over for Mister's roast and mashed potatoes - so delicious.  We've started trading houses for Sunday night dinner lately and it's been such a great and delicious end to the weekend.

Hooray for a short week!!

Fridays with Floyd : Thief

I know everyone thinks this face
(his not mine)
is totally innocent all the time.
I hate to burst your image of Floyd but, he isn't.
Besides being rascally, he has a bit of a stealing problem.
And I'm 100% certain that performs his stealing act as his daily entertainment.

One Floyd steals something he takes off in a sprint (he's shockingly fast) and does laps around the kitchen table- darting in and out of the chair legs. And I know this is hard to believe, but he's actually really hard to catch. He has quite the method down pat.

It's hard to get mad at him when he has such ridiculous things in his mouth.
I mean, try reprimanding a dog that has a huge sweet potato in their mouth...I dare you.
However, his stealing ways have ended him up in time out a time or two.

Here are a few of the things he's swiped...
Paper towels/napkins
Dish towels (this one happens every single day)
Sweet potato
Banana (and ate 1/2 the peel)
Christmas ornaments
Socks
Shoe insoles (also every day)
Undergarments
Toothbrushes (ours and guests- embarrassing Floyd!)
Chapstick, gum, granola bars from purses
Clothes
Sandwiches
Make up brushes
Ankle weights
DVDs
Slippers
Half a loaf of banana bread

And those are just things I can think off the top of my head.
I am not exaggerating when I say I have to chase him down and get something out of his mouth almost every day.
He is by far the nosiest (and entitled) dog you've ever met.

So 97% of the time he's pretty stinkin good and snuggly.  But the other 3%....whew. Not always an angel.  And if you are ever at our house and missing something, I'd check with the basset.

Cold Weather Running Gear

As you guys know, I'm sorta into this running thing.
But what I'm not so into is this cold weather.
One of my largest pet peeves in life is being cold.
So it only makes sense I voluntarily throw myself outside to exercise. In the cold. Multiple times a week.

I managed to get through the summer without buying too much running gear, although it is quickly becoming my favorite thing to purchase.
But with these colder temperatures and wind, some cold weather running gear is necessary.
(Along with some reflectors and head lamps.)

I don't have nearly what I need...yet (Santa?) but I do have some to get me through.
Below is a mix of what I do have and love and a few things I'd love to see under the tree...or wrapped up for my birthday.
For some reason I really love that this headband and hat have holes for your ponytail.
Convenient, warm and cute!

I spotted this pullover at Target last weekend and almost put it in my cart.
And then I restrained myself, but I've been thinking about it ever since. Wink wink Santa.

I have a similar 1/4 Zip Pullover to this and I am obsessed with it.  It's warm, snug and has thumb holes...everything I need!

I am in desparate need of some good gloves and these even have a light on them, perfect for those night runs!

I have these pants (and the capri version) and LOVE them.  I love the compression aspect and they keep me warm throughout my whole run.

And, besides the promise of coffee and an a hot shower at the end, these are the pieces that are (and hopefully will be) getting me through these winter runs.

Weekend Wrap Up : FriendTime

This past weekend was really great.
And delicious.
Our very good friends came down on Friday for a kid free weekend in Cincinnati and we were so excited to see them.
Friday night I whipped up a BIG pot of THE CHILI and cornbread.
Along with a side of wine in this adorable cup that Kady brought me.
(p.s she has more for sale in her Etsy store, these make great Christmas gifts!)

Saturday morning I had the opportunity to run the Girls on the Run 5k downtown. Girls on the Run is such a great organization and the race was so fun and inspiring to see all the little girls running their hearts out!

The rest of Saturday was spent watching football and having a great, no plans, day.
We spent the afternoon at a newish brewery downtown called Rhinegeist.
Then dinner and all of it's yumminess came around.
A brand new Cooper's Hawk just opened up near us and we were very excited to try it.
I had been to one in Columbus and was so excited that we were getting one.  They have great wine and an even better menu.
I had white truffle risotto with short ribs for dinner.
I'm still thinking about how good it was.

Sunday was a very lazy day but I did manage to cross a few Christmas items off the list and order our Christmas cards! Those will be revealed soon enough!
Santa is trying to get an early start this year!

{Fashion} Friday with Floyd

It's pretty evident that Floyd is a fashionable dude.
I mean, just look at that bow tie up there.

Now with it being a bit colder, he has moved on to scarves.
I'm not sure what came over me (besides pure genius) but last weekend I wrapped one of my infinity scarves around Floyd's neck and haven't looked back.
I would be lying if I said I haven't looked at that photo a million times since I took it.
I just think he looks like such a doll.

And, much to Mister's dismay, he really liked the scarf.
He kept it on for an hour+ and just snoozed away on the sofa in the sunshine.
I know he would have worn it longer if I would have let him.
I really think that he liked how warm it kept his neck.
Good thing for him I own about eleventyhundred scarves.
I have options for all of your outfits, Bud.

And in other basset fashions, this sweater has popped up at Target recently.
If that doesn't have Mister all over, I'm just not sure what does.

And we can not leave out the cutest lumberjack on the block.

Hair Trainin'

I've always been envious of those girls that say they can go 3+ days without washing their hair.
Not this girl.
It used to be 0 days and slowly, very slowly it's grown to 2.
I think I've finally, after all these years, I've figured it out.
And because it took me so long to figure out, I'd thought I would help you ladies out and share my tools and secrets.
Or maybe, you all have figured this out already and I'm really late to the game.
Either way, below is what works for me using a mix of baby powder, dry shampoo (I love Suave, it's cheap and works great) and a teasing brush.  I also have to give an honorable mention to hair powder.

First of all, I hate getting up in the morning to wash my hair (I'd much rather snuggle with that rascally basset I have) so I almost always wash it at night.  Also cancelling out any need to blow dry, double win.  Thank you stick straight hair...I like you, sometimes.

Morning 1 I use a little dry shampoo at my roots (yes, even when it's freshly clean) and then curl my hair. I try to pin it back so it stays out of my face and cleaner.
Night 1 I douse my head with baby powder at night before bed.
As much as I love dry shampoo, I love baby powder even more.
But only at night because this dark hair and baby powder isn't a cute look.
It really seems to soak up the oil and lets me wake up with really clean looking hair.

Morning 2 I spray my roots with dry shampoo and get to teasin'.
Day 2 usually requires a lot of teasing so I can wear a handband or a top knot.
If you put one thing on your Christmas list this year, it should be that teasing brush, it's a straight miracle worker.  If you need further proof, PLL poufed my hair with it one time and we know that girl can work wonders with hair.
Night 2 time for washing again, sadly. I am really trying to stretch this to another day, work in progress!

There are multiple benefits here and I think the major one is not having to wash your hair every day. We've all heard it's better not too and I am seconding that notion! Plus, not drying it every day is a huge bonus.
And we all want healthier locks, right?

My hair can get really oily at moments notice.  The longer it's gotten, the quicker this seems to happen.  Riddle me that one?
Although with this process, the oilness seems to be getting better and better.
I used to not believe people when they said they had to 'train' their hair but it's definitely true and I am a believer now.
Granted it isn't a fun (or sometimes cute) process but it works!

Thank goodness it's getting colder and we can all throw some cute beanies on during those not so cute days!
(Ps this one is going on my Christmas list. And this one just has need written all over it.)

Go forth with your luscious locks!

Best. Chili. Ever.

In our house we love big, hearty soups.
And chili is no exception.
I'm the type of person that's never made the same chili twice.
But, after this one I may have to start.

Not to toot my own horn, but this was really good.
And if you don't believe me, here's evidence from Mister when he finished off the leftovers while I was at dinner with friends.
See? It must be good if Mister said so!
(just don't tell his mom because she makes some pretty darn good chili herself!)

I loosely started with this from Skinnytaste and kept adding.

Best Chili Ever (according to Mister)
Ingredients
Olive oil
1 lbs ground turkey
1 onion, diced
Red wine (a splash for the meat and enough for a glass or two for you)
1 large sweet potato, chopped
1 can black beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can diced tomatoes (chili ready)
1 can 8oz tomato sauce
1 can crushed tomatoes (large)
salt to taste
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp everyday seasoning (Trader Joes, could omit)
1 cup cooked quinoa (optional)
1 bay leaf

1. Coat bottom of soup pot or Dutch oven with olive oil.  Add diced onions and ground turkey.  Cook until onions are translucent and meat is browned.  Add a splash of red wine.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients.
3. Let simmer for about 30 minutes (or more if you can!), remove the bay leaf and ENJOY!
Delicious and easy!
With the threat of super cold temperatures and snow (!) in our parts, you can bet this chili will be appearing in our kitchen again very soon!

Fridays with Floyd : Lately

Floyd here today!
I've seen mama and you other bloggers do a 'life lately' post and I thought it was high time I did one of my own.

Eating : I'm on some new food and I really like it. So much so that I've been trying to convince Mama and Papa that I need 3 bowls a day.

Watching : Still keepin an eye on the hood.  And you know, whatever the parents have on the tube every night.  Well, before I fall asleep on my couch that is.  But that 3-4 minutes I'm awake I like to know what's going on with Homeland.

Reading : All the Charlie books.  Don't tell Mama and Papa but the other dogs in the neighborhood and I are in a book club during the day.  We are getting ready to start the Christmas Charlie book next week, you know, to get in the spirit.

Exercising : Well I'm still taking the parents for a walk every afternoon.  It's a lot of work but they really need it and I like to get out too and check on my friends.
And every night about 9 o'clock I come in from pottying and like to go REALLY nuts and run around the house like a crazy person dog.

Sleeping : In Papa's spot whenever he gets up from my couch.  His spot is always warm and the best seat on my couch so it's really just common sense.

Thinking : If it's Thanksgiving yet?
I could really go for some turkey. And dressing. And mashed potatoes.

And that's what is going on the world of Floyd.  Hope things are going well in your world!

P.s. Mama said to check out this delicious fall recipe she shared over at Anne's blog earlier this week.

Thoughts While Running : Volume 2

I thought I would keep this tradition up after my post last time on thoughts while running my last half.

This time was a new slew of crazy thoughts.

Bethany and I were excited to run with one of our friends for the race because she had completed a few fun races lately and we were intrigued for an update.  Also she's one of my favorite people to run with because she always has the best stories and keeps us entertained for miles.

Well we lost her at mile 3...and Bethany and I had spent the majority of the previous day together.
So many of our topics had been covered...but no fear, we never have a shortage of things to talk about.

Mile 1-3 : life updates with our running buddies
Mile 3 : Our split was 7:53, whoa nelly, too fast! We knew we must slow down or I would die.
Oh! A water stop, a little early for me but, hey, it'll slow our pace a little so I'm game.
*I then proceed to attempt to grab a water cup from a young girl volunteering and SPILL IT ALL OVER HER. I felt so bad, stopped to apologize and she just kept waving me one. Sorry!
Mile 4 : Feeling good, we slowed down a little...8:23ish.  Not a bad pace but still a tad fast for me.  Bethany was bound and determined to get me a PR and we were well on our way! Whoo!

Bethany once told me that she disliked 5ks/short runs because they weren't long enough to find her groove. I used to think she was nuts.  I finally know what she means. Anything less than 3-4 that can be somewhat brutal until you find your groove. I spent this mile telling her she was right all along :)
Mile 5-6 : Discussion about some Christmas secrets I can't quite share yet ;)
But we were finally finding our groove and well on our way.
Mile 6 : We are about 42ish minutes in and the guy in the lead of the race passed us, as in, he's already made the turn around and heading BACK. Crazy.  My mind was blown.  Teach me your ways, sir!!
Mile 7 : Oh water stop and I think I can see the turn around, the end (sorta) is in site.
Except the course keeps going and going and going. We were certain that the path to the turn around was NEVER going appear.
Mile 8 : Phew, we are turned around and headed toward home. I can do this, only 5 more miles. I've run 5 miles plenty of times.  5 miles on top of the 8 I've already done, not so much but I've done it and that's all that matters.
Mile 9 : The worst mile the whole race. For some reason I lost my groove, couldn't catch my breath and wanted to just sit. I tried eating a Jolly Rancher for a boost of sugar, well that went south and fast.  There goes that idea.  Probably because I grabbed the blue raspberry and not the grape, everyone knows grape is the best.
Mile 10 : I had to walk for a quick 30 seconds and Bethany went ahead.
Time for my jams! I had been training my new Rhianna Pandora station (anyone else train their stations?) and I was ready to jam out for the last three miles.
And jam I DID.
Mile 11 : Over it
I can do this!
Over it
Only 2 more miles!!
Over it...
Mile 12 : (The finish line was in sight but we had to go past it and through a trail and back to it...)
This is ridiculous! Why can't I just be done?!
Sarah, you'll be done in less than 10 minutes and you can start thinking about what burger you want for dinner!!
Mind over matter!
A hill?! Who invented hills??
Burger!!!
Mile 13 : I CAN SEE THE END!
Oh geez, do we really have to wind all the way through this parking lot to finish?!
Mile 13.1 : See Mister snapping pictures and know that I'm going to PR!
WHOOOO! Burger time!!

As you can see, an hour+ into running, my sense of normalcy goes out the window and crazy starts rolling in.
As much as I love running, there are points when I just want to be DONE but I know the sense of accomplishment I'll have when I'm done is just the push I need to keep going.

*Big thank you to all my friends and family for all their running support!

Spice Up Your Birthday Gift with These Ribbon and Wrapping Tips

I love giving gifts any time of the year but with the holidays right around the corner I thought we could all use some tips to jazz up our gifts.
And, while we are talking gifts, my birthday is right around the corner...just in case you were wondering ;)

Giving presents to people is about more than increasing their opinion of you. If you give a person a truly heartfelt gift, then it is a token of appreciation that shows how much you value another individual. Giving presents such as birthday gifts can be highly symbolic in that respect, if, of course, a good amount of thought and consideration has been put into said gift! It's not all about the actual gift either; how you present the gift to the other person is almost as important. With that in mind, here are some ribbon and wrapping tips to really spice up your birthday gift.
 via

Make a Large and Splashy Impression

You can make a large and splashy impression with how you choose to tie your ribbon around your gift. Take some wired ribbon and then tie it around the present to create a basic bow. Then, tie three additional bows around the first one's knot, and make sure that the loops are then facing in all kinds of different directions. Basically, you will create an 8-point asterisk of sorts. Not only will this be something spectacular and unique to look at, but it will also give you a chance to mix both patterns and colors of ribbons for even more amazing effects.

Attempt a One-Loop Bow

You can also try something totally different and rare when you work with ribbons for gift wrapping purposes. If you are sick and tired of the standard bows, you should definitely try this alternative way of wrapping your present. First, wrap your ribbon all the way around the gift box, and then tie it just one time so that there are actually two loose ends that you can work with. Now, form a loop out of one end while wrapping the opposite end around it, just like you would do when forming a regular bow! Finally, you can pull the ribbon through so that you are left with only a single loop.

Use Twists in Succession

 via

Sometimes when you are wrapping gifts, it can be very helpful to perform a certain twist on a traditional way of trying ribbons on gift boxes. What you want to do is tie a simple and basic ribbon all around your gift box. Then, you can finish it off with a fast knot on the top. This will be in place of the usual bow. Then, you have the luxury of actually lining up several of these knots all in a row, either just straight across or diagonally. These are the best ways in which you can spice up your birthday gift with these ribbon-wrapping tips.

via

A ribbon just isn't for your hair; it can also provide beautiful ornamentation and visual appeal on any present that you wrap. And that's what really counts when you are wrapping presents: Making them appear attractive to the eye, so that the person receiving the present has something to really look at. Follow these tips above, and the next present you wrap will have that wow effect.

I have managed to grab a few Christmas gifts already and I am dying to wrap them up beautifully!  Now, if I can just get Mister on board with putting the tree up already...

Weekend Wrap Up : 2 in the books

This weekend was pretty bananas crazy and I could really use another day to recover.
Although at least we had an extra hour to sleep, that did help!
Sadly, I was so busy I took absolutely 0 pictures...had to rely on Mister to have pictures for this post!! What kind of blogger am I?? Thank goodness for a great blogger husband ;)

Friday after work we hosted a client wrap up party for a kitchen we had recently finished!
It was so fun and the kitchen is SO beautiful I wouldn't hate if it were mine!

Saturday was a mix of errands, a short run and a baby shower for a our dear friend, Autumn.
Saturday night was very low key in preparation for Sunday...

Sunday we were up bright and early for me to run my second half marathon.  I kept quiet about this race because until I signed up I wasn't sure I was going to do it or not.
Since my last half, I've been sorta itching to do another.
The one I ran was really close to our house and just early enough in the winter that I knew I wouldn't freeze to death so I decided to go for it.  Plus Bethany was running it and I knew I would have a running/chatting buddy!
Turns out it's a great thing I ran the race because 1. it went well and I felt good 90% of the time and 2. I PRed!!
I took 9 minutes off my last half time and that just feels really great!

In a year where my biggest goal was to do a 10k, I am so happy to report I've done 2 half marathons!  If you would have told me that last January when I made that list, I would have surely laughed in your face.
It is really true, you never know what can change in a year.

Sunday night was spent at a celebratory end of the year race party with the group I run with and, of course, celebratory burger for dinner.  Or refueling, whatever you want to call it.

7 Ways to Modernise Your Living Room on a Tight Budget

You guys know I love a good dose of interior design and DIY...considering that is what I do in my every day life.  I thought I would start sharing more of my inspiration with you!
I am honored to share this post written by Daniel Johns with you guys today on some great interior design tips and tricks.
Take it away, Daniel!

Home improvements projects can be costly, but they don't have to be. Budgeting and creative designing can make your living room look and feel like a brand-new space even if you've lived there for years.

1. Remove Clutter

 via
The longer you live in a place, the more you collect. Clutter has a particularly "vintage" feel, so you'll want to remove it to update your home's look. Furthermore, clutter collects dust, and if you're not vigilante about dusting in your living room, it can appear messier than it actually is. Consider breaking up accessories and small decor items into groups that you can swap out as the seasons change if you just can't let go of your material possessions. You might find that some accessories work better in other rooms, and rearranging or removing clutter doesn't cost a cent!

2. Paint Up a Storm

Some people recommend that you treat your walls like you treat your nails. Now, you probably don't want glitter on your walls, but picking out-of-the-ordinary colors can breathe new life into your home without making a lot of other changes. Use a mint green or a chocolate brown. You can paint opposite walls the same color or use a single wall as an accent if it doesn't make your room feel overly small, too. After you add a coat or two of paint, add blank frames of different shapes that you paint to match the walls. It adds texture and something for your guests to talk about.

3. Treat Your Windows Right

Updating curtains and blinds is an easy way to give your living room flair. Consider wood blinds in place of tacky plastic or metal mini-blinds. Heavy draperies are also a thing of the past. You can lighten the mood by choosing fun colors or sheer curtains. Those won't do much to black out the sun, so make sure you're using curtains and blinds if you want to keep your rooms cool in the middle of summer. For a minimalistic approach, consider curtains in muted versions of the paint on your wall. Curtains are easy to make if you have a sewing machine, so you can find your perfect color by stopping at the fabric store instead of shelling out the big dollars at other retailers.

4. Lighten Up

An airy and open feels lends to a modern luck, which is why you might opt for lighter furniture with metal frames that leave the floor visible. Glass-topped tables and desks also lend to the aid of openness, and furniture with a lighter look often weighs less, so rearranging becomes easier.
Metal furniture is often available in sleek white, black or grey, and the monochromatic look is quite contemporary. However, your home doesn't have to be stark. You can brighten and soften it up with pops up color in the form of throw pillows and blankets on your sofa and chairs or vases on counter and tabletops. You don't have to buy all-new pillows, either. It's often more affordable to buy standard pillows and replace the shams when you want to add color. If you care to try your hand at sewing, you can make your own covers, too.
When it comes to literal light, you might not want to swap out your fixtures or mess with electrical wiring. However, switching a shade can make a big impact without breaking the bank.

5. Shopping Savvy

You'll spend a lot of money when you're upgrading your home if you buy everything new. Do more than looking for sales. Hit up garage sales, resales shops and your parents' attic. You can also use the Internet to save a buck or two. Sites like Freecycle connect consumers who have things to trade for free as long as you pick them up. Craigslist might offer some things for free, but you can find appliances, decor and supplies on the cheap if you're willing to deal in cash.

6. Add Something Green

A plant on a table or floor freshens air, gives you something to bond with and looks chic. You can choose from a variety of leafy or flowering plants, and there's something no matter how much space you have available. Plants like bamboo are especially modern. You might find out have a green thumb and give plant trimmings as gifts to the people that you love or enjoy the fruits of your labor if you start a windowsill herb garden.

7. Walk on In

 via
A rug is not only functional, but a unique print or shape can really add to the effect you're going for. If you're dealing with old wood floors and lack the budget to add new ones, consider adding matte paint to even out the appearance and hide stains. Stencil a unique design if you want something that pops.

Fridays with Floyd : Scrub a Dub Bub

We didn't let the rain and threat of storms but a damper (pun intended) on our Halloween celebrations.
We handed out candy, oohed and ahhed over the costumes and dressed up Floyd, of course.
Because what good is a holiday if you can't dress up your fur children?

Remember earlier this week when I asked you to guess what Floyd's Halloween costume would be?
Well, it's time for the official reveal (although Instagram got a sneak peek last night)...
Scrub a Dub Bub!!
Considering Floyd's recent obsession with hanging out in the bath tub, we thought this was only appropriate.
It's a wonder he still even talks to us
Why yes, that is a 0-9 month old robe from Target.
I would donate to one of our friends that is having a boy but we had to cut the arm holes because someone is a little chunky.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!
